What are porcelain crowns and bridges?
What are porcelain crowns and bridges? Removable devices, such as dentures, can be taken out and cleaned daily, however, porcelain crowns and bridges cannot. They are cemented onto your existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by the dentist. A crown is a cover or “cap” the dentist can put on one tooth. A bridge is a replacement tooth or teeth that fill the space where one or more teeth are missing. Both a crown and a bridge will require at least two dental visits to complete the process.
How are porcelain crowns placed?
First, the tooth is prepared by removing its outer portion so the crown will fit. At this time, decay is also removed. Next, an impression is made to provide an exact model for the crown. You will get a temporary crown while you wait for the permanent one to be ready, which usually takes less than two weeks. Our professional lab technician then uses the model to help make the porcelain crown. When the new crown is ready, the dentist places it in your mouth and makes the necessary adjustments. When the doctor is satisfied with how it looks and feels the crown is cemented in place.
How is a porcelain bridge placed?
On the first visit, the doctor prepares the teeth on both sides of the gap. They will later attach the bridge to these teeth. Our dentist then takes an impression or an image of your teeth, and space, and sends it to our dental lab. Technicians at the lab will then make the bridge. The doctor will place a temporary bridge to protect your prepared teeth while you are waiting for the permanent one. When the permanent porcelain bridge is ready, the dentist fits, then adjusts and cements the bridge to the prepared tooth/teeth. This kind of bridge is permanent and cannot be taken out of your mouth without a dentist’s help.
Same-day crowns can easily restore damaged teeth in one visit. At Dental Home, our on-site technology allows us to create your custom crown in a single office visit. Digital imaging takes a picture of the decayed tooth and eliminates the need for any uncomfortable impressions. The image is transferred and displayed on our computer screen, where the dentist will use 3D technology to design your new crown. Then, CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) creates the crown while you wait. The dentist bonds the crown to the surface of the old tooth, and you’re ready to go. The whole procedure takes about one hour in our Dental Home office.
